Bruno is a curious nine year old boy who enjoys exploring at Out-with. He is very short for his age and is often picked at for it from his older sister, Gretel. Bruno also enjoys reading and questioning everything. He did not want to move from his happy home in Berlin to the house at Out-with.
Mother is tall
"If the Commandant asks, we'll say that I cleaned Bruno up."
Bruno is 9 years old
Gretel is 12 years of age and nearly 13. She also likes to act older than she really is. This might be partly the reason she is a hopeless case. Gretel can be mean to her younger brother, Bruno, at times, but a lot of older siblings are. She likes to talk to the soldier named Lieutenant Kotler. Her favorite thing was to play with her immense collection of dolls.
"You don't have any food on you, do you?
Gretel has blonde hair
Father is the reason that Bruno and his family moved to Out-with. He had received a job offer. Father is very strict and stern which could have something to do with not having an understanding of how the rest of his family is feeling about moving. He is also very secretive about the fence and the people living on the other side of it.
"I certainly am a doctor. Just because a man glances up at the sky at night does not make him an astronomer."
Mother is an anxious person who wants the best for Bruno and the rest of the family. She is not completely on board with the fact that they have moved from their lovely home in Berlin. She is a compassionate person who cares for everyone, not just herself. An example of this would be when she helped Pavel out by taking the blame.

Shmuel is a 9 year old, Jew boy who lives on the other side of the fence. Bruno and him talked to each other through the fence almost every day for a year. Shmuel and everyone else on the side of the fence with the concentration camp wear striped pajamas. Shmuel shows pity for himself and his situation however, he is very well educated and polite. This may have something to do with living with his family above his fathers watch shop in Poland, and being an only child.
Shmuel is afraid
Shmuel has large eyes, the color of caramel sweets.
Shmuel is very small

Pavel in an old man, quite petite, and has very angular features. He is also a Jew. He comes to Bruno's house because he is a waiter, not by choice, however. When he did not live at the concentration camp he practiced as a doctor. One day when he was peeling carrots and potatoes in the kitchen he saw a young boy fall off of a swing, and he was being compassionate and a great risk taker when he helped out the young boy.
