On Sunday 28 June 1914, The town of Sarajevo in Bosnia was preparing for the visit of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie.
Six teenage assassins, of the Black Hand Group, sworn to kill the Archduke, lay in wait for their chance
As the cars passed the Cumujura Bridge, the next assassin, Cabriolvic, threw his bomb, drank his vial of poison and jumped into the river. The Archduke saw the bomb coming and threw it out his car. It hit the car behind and injured several people.
The Archduke was then driven to the Town Hall where he demanded to visit the bomb victims in the hospital. A new route was taken to avoid any more assassination attempts.
All except Gavrilo Princep, who went to the cafe across the street. At 10;45 when Princip was standing outside the cafe, the Archduke's car appeared beside him. He could hardly believe his luck, drew his gun and fired the two rounds that sparked World War 1.
