In Paris in the 19th century a woman born into a poor family with no dowry and prospects. She settled for a minor clerk in the ministry od education named M. Loisel. They had just enough money and where in the middle class. She was greedy for more stuff though.
When M. Loisel got them a party invite Mme. Loisel was not thrild because she didn't have anything nice to where and no jewelery.
M. Loisel gave her four hundred francs to buy a new dress that he was going to use for a hunting rifle and she asked her rich friend for jewlery which she chose a diamond necklace that her friend agreed with her to borrow. She then went to the dance stylishly.
Mme. Loisel loses the necklace she borowed from her friend Mme. Forestier. Her husband and herself looked around their place and then her husband went out to find the diamond necklace
M. Loisel uses his enherance and loans to buy a new one for thirty-six thousand francs. They had to work, move, hand had to fire their maid.
After 10 years Mme. Loisel ran into Mme. Forestier. Mme. Loisel told her what happened with the necklace and then Mme. Forestier smiled. Mme. Forestier then tells Loisel that the original necklace was a fake that cost her five hundred francs.
