Set in Paris, France in 1880. Madame Loisel is a young middle-class women, married with not a lot of money.
Madame Loisel dreams of having a better social life. One day her husband brings her an invitation to an upper-class party, but she does not want to go because she has nothing to wear. Monsieur Loisel told her she can buy a dress for 450 franks, so she did.
After Madame Loisel bought her dress she realized she would look poor to the others without a gem or necklace. She told her husband she would rather not go, but reminded her she had a friend she could borrow a necklace from. She went to her friends and picked out a beautiful diamond necklace.
When Madame Loisel got home from the party she realized that the necklace was gone. Her husband Monsieur Loisel retraced their steps for hours but came home with nothing. He suggested that they tell her friends they broke it and were getting fixed for more time.
After weeks they still found nothing. Monsieur Loisel used all his inheritance, borrowed money, and bought a brand new diamond necklace. Madame Loisel had to do all of the housework and Monsieur used all his money to go towards their debt. After ten years they had finally paid off all of their debt.
One day Madame Loisel who now looked all old was sitting down and saw the friend whom she borrowed the necklace from. She went to her and told her all that happened and how her and her husband spent ten years of their life paying off their debt for the necklace. Madame Loisel's friend looked surprised and told her that her necklace was only paste not real diamond.
