My home was large and beautiful and we had lots of visitors and happy times.
Which one of you is Jiang Ji-Li? You must come with me.
Yes, I am Ji Li.
This was a great honor, but for me,it was the beginning of my downward decline into hopelessness and despair.
I went from being happy, proud & hopeful to sad, ashamed and hopeless.
I was born in Shanghai China, on Chinese New Year. I was lucky, I was happy and I had a bright future. But that was before the Cultural Revolution. That was when everything changed. When my life was turned upside down and I became very unhappy.
It all began when I was selected to be a dancer in the Red Army Dance Corp. I was hand-picked out of many students. I was the happiest I had ever been; proud and excited to be part of the great Cultural Revolution Army.... until my parents told me I must not audition... that exposing my background could cause serious problems for the family.
You see, Chairman Mao, started the Cultural Revolution in order to make all people equal. No poor, no rich, all people the equal in social status. The problem with that for me, was that I came from a family os wealthy landowners. The Red Party was against all people with a history of wealth or power.
