Nick says that Gatsby, "Stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way...toward the green light (Fitzgerald 20-21) . This is important because it is a motif and a symbol that stands for him reaching for his dreams His dream is to be together with Daisy forever and he is reaching towards Daisy's house across the bay.
Nick describe, "His head leaned back so far that is rested against the face of a defunct mantelpiece clock...Daisy sat frightened. The clock took this moment this moment to tilt dangerously (Fitzgerald 86). The clock represents broken relationship and you can't repeat the past. This connects to the theme attachment to the past.
Gatsby, "Stretched out his hand desperately as if to snatch only a wisp of air, to save a fragment of the spot that she had made lovely for him" (Fitzgerald 153). Gatsby was reaching for Daisy like the green light. This connects to the theme corruption of the American Dream because Gatsby's dream was to have Daisy forever and that will never happen.
