  • His words liberated me. I thought, this is it... this is the way out.
  • John Lewis on page 27 describes the passage that struck him strongly and he could not comprehend it at the time. "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This phrase resonated with him as he had preached the same words to his chickens, he knew he wanted to be a preacher.
  • The North Was Very Different
  • Theme - Civic Ideals and Practices
  • After coming back from Chicago and witnessing the integrated neighborhoods in Buffalo, Ohio. Lewis could not help but notice his own life was quite different than the white children. Everything he knew was a hand-me-down from his textbooks all the way to the dirt fields he played on recess.
  • Segregation Outlawed
  • Theme - Civic Ideals and Practices
  • This workshop of Nonviolence that John Lewis had attended he felt was the foundation for his liberation from the evils of racism, poverty and war. Jim Lawson had conveyed the urgency to develop their Philosophy, their disipline, and their own understanding to combat the problems they faced.
  • "Test Sit-Ins"
  • I'm sorry, we can't serve you here.
  • Theme - Civic Ideals and Practices
  • After arriving in Ohio on his way to Buffalo, John had noticed how in his uncle Otis's neighborhood they were fully integrated and lived with white people right next door like it was a dream out of otherworldly experience. This type of Civil ideal was not realized yet where John had lived so this astonished him.
  • During his freshman year of high school John had witnessed the end of the "Separate but Equal" doctrine. It was ruled as 'unconstitutional' but the evils of racism still persisted with senators like James Eastland and Strom Thurmond swearing their continued defiance of the court.
  • I thought that, come fall, I'd be riding a state-of-the-art bus to a state-of-the-art school.
  • The students of the workshop decided to test local store policies, establishing that they would NOT serve an interracial or all-black group.
