Storyboard Text

  • The families of the guards actually lived in building #65, 3 apartment buildings, one large duplex, and three large houses for higher officers and his family.
  • The guards on Alcatraz get paid on average about $1700 a year in 1934.
  • In 1934 on Alcatraz all the mail sent in and out was checked by a mail censor. Some rules were that the letter must use the person's full name that they were sending to, no nicknames or initials. They also checked for hidden messages by sending the letter through a blue light
  • It is similar in the story because there are 3 apartments and pipers house (which is the large houses for higher ranking officers).
  • In thee book it says Moose's dad doesn't get paid well and his mom had to work an extra job. In 1934 the average pay for a guard was 1700$ a year, which was a pretty good job back then. Now the average pay is about 90,000$ a year.
  • In the book they also checked the mail for hidden messages and censored all things they felt inappropriate
