This scene is important to the story because it show's how Jonas is thinking differently about the community after going to the Annex for his training with the Giver. During the night Jonas likes to share his thoughts and feelings on things with Gabriel while he is asleep. Not to mention Gabriel has not been "fitting" in the community lately and has trouble sleeping at night so he likes to sleep in Jonas's room as it comforts him. This scene portrays 2 things, choice and Jonas's new perspective on the present.
