  • Religous
  • The young man had heard the call of his Uncle Sam and decided to enlist in the United States Army.
  • Example
  • This means that a young man who was eligible to go into the military enlists because he heard the voice of Uncle Sam, persuading him to join the United States Army.
  • Explanation
  • The phrase, "I don't know him from Adam," is used when you see someone and don't recognize them at all. It refers to the Bible in which Adam is the first man created by God. The phrase is saying that if you saw someone that you didn't recognize, even if you went all the way down the family tree you wouldn't know who they were.
  • "There's a new boy in our class he's from a different elementary school in our corporation. You may or may not recognize him." "Do you recognize him?" "I don't know him from Adam."
  • This means that the two boys already in the class are introduced to a boy who is new. When the one boy asks the other if he knows who the kid is he says he doesn't know him from Adam, therefore he has no idea who the boy is.
