In this scene, the couple has purchased the new dress for the Madame Loisel and have borrowed the necklace from Madame Forestier. They are ready to head to the party.
Madame Loisel and Monsiuer Loisel arrive at the party. They both have a great time as Madame Loisel dances the night away.
As they arrive home from the party, Madame Loisel notices that she has lost the necklace. They retrace all their steps and call back to the party to see if someone had found it.
They go and speak to jeweler to see about replacing the expensive necklace. He says he can get another necklace very similar to the original so they take out all the loans they can to pay it back.
The couple works non-stop for ten years to pay off their debt, causing great stress and poverty on them.
Madame Loisel and Madame Forestier stumble upon each other. Forestier doesn't even recognize Loisel because of how different she looks after all that hard work. She tells Forestier about the necklace they had to replace and the crippling debt it caused. Forestier explains the necklace was fake, ending the story.
