  • Let's rally support in Congress for this!
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • The Northerners opposed the compromise because they felt so poorly about slavery, that they wanted to finally abolish it, and not make even make a compromise to keep slavery around.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • Yay! I can now get my slaves back, with help of the law!
  • The Northern states wanted Congress to decide because they would have more supporters. They would have more supporters to become a free state. Northerners knew that they had enough supporters to pass this.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • The North didn’t support slavery and was trying to abolish the addition of a slave state would put them back and bring unbalance to Congress.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • Without my slaves, how will I ever grow cotton?
  • The Southerners supported the compromise because all the runaway slaves would be brought back and more slave states would rise instead of free states.
  • They believed that only the State government had the power to make laws about slavery.
  • The Southern states thought that slavery would be abolished and that this would be an end to their economy, mainly being the cotton as their economic crop
