My love and my Faith, of all nights in the year, this one night i must tarry away from thee.
Then God bless you! and may you find all well when you come back.
You are late, Goodman Brown. The clock of the old south was striking as I came through Boston, and that is a full fifteen minutes agone.
Faith kept me back a while.
Sit here and rest yourself a while; and when you feel like moving again, there is my staff to help you along.
Friend. My mind is made up. Not another step will I budge on this errand... is (there) any reason i should quit my dear Faith and go after (the woman)
This story begins in a village sometime after the Salem witch trials and King Phillip's War, where we find a man and his wife Faith. He is intending to leave, but the location is unknown. Faith is very distraught over his leavance.
Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness. Welcome again to the communion of your race
Faith! Faith! Look up to heaven, and resist the wicked one.
As he leaves his wife and the village, he comes across a strange man waiting for him. On his way he begins to hear dark things on the forest path, and a dark mood is beginning to develop.
From that day on....
I am so happy to see you are back I could almost kiss you in front of the entire village!!
It comes to the reader that this mysterious man knows Goodman Brown, and his ancestry somewhat. As his evil intentions begin to become more exposed, he quits walking with the now-exposed devil, who leaves him his staff and the later decision to eventually follow.
Even when he died it was an hour of gloom...
RIP Goodman Brown
After seeing his childhood seminar, along with many other religious and moral leaders in his life join the devil, and sees the devil take his wife, he gives up. He takes the staff and runs to the congregation, where he finds even the most pious among those who do wicked and evil. Then he sees Faith about to be inducted, and begins to realize that humankind is In nature evil.
As he yells at his wife not to be inducted into this cult-like group, he suddenly finds himself regaining consciousness at the base of a rock in the forest. He does not know if what he saw was real or fake. He returns to the village very serious and is not almost at all happy to see his wife after what happened that night.
After that incident with the devil and his small adventure, Goodman Brown was never the same again, mistrusting everyone and seeing the hypocrisy and sin in everyone. Especially in his own wife.
