  • French Revolution
  • Let's kill the king! 
  • Neutrality Proclamation
  • We shall not take sides in war of  France against Britain.
  • The French Question
  • It violates the Neutrality Proclamation.
  • I understand.
  • We need to use privateers in the war.
  • The French citizens were inspired by the U.S. to take part in the French Revolution. Because of this the U.S. supported the French rebels in the war. The Americans lost all support when the French rebels beheaded their king. A few years after the revolution started France and Britain went to war.
  • Jay's Treaty
  • After France went to war with Britain, m=the Americans had mixed opinions on who to side with. Washington issued the Neutrality Proclamation that stated the U.S. wouldn't side with any European countries that go to war. He thought it was safest for the long run.
  • Pinckney's Treaty
  • Edmond Genet of France came to Washington to ask if American sailors could command privateers. Washington told Genet that using U.S. privateers violates the Neutrality Proclamation. Even Genet agreed that it was a bad idea.
  • Northwest Territory
  • After the British seized American ships carrying food to the French West Indies. This lead to the signing of Jay's Treaty. Washington wanted to prevent another war with Britain. The two sides signed Jay's Treaty to settle the disputes that had arisen between the U.S. and Britain.
  • After Spain closed the port of New Orleans to U.S. ships, stopping American trade. The two sides signed Pinckney's Treaty. This treaty settled disputes on the southern border and trade with Spain. This also reopened the port of New Orleans to U.S. ships and gave them the right to deposit.
  • While the U.S. was dealing with international problems, Britain was arming Native Americans with guns. This allowed the Native Americans to go to war with the U.S. over the U.S. citizens taking over land. The Native Americans did end up using the guns given to by Britain to fight the U.S..
