We shall give you most of our lands in the Northwest Territory.
There shall be a new tax on whiskey.
After U.S. forces losing a battle to Miami Chief Little Turtle General Anthony Wayne took command of U.S. troops. The U.S. troops defeated the Native Americans in the Battle of the Fallen Timbers.
The War With No Battle
Where is everyone?
A year after the U.S. defeated the Native Americans the two sides signed the Treaty of Greenville. This treaty gave the U.S. claim to most of the Native American lands in the Northwest Territory.
The people are America's true heroes!
In March Congress passed a tax on Whiskey made in America. The passing of this tax caused the Whiskey Rebellion. A group of Pennsylvania farmers rebelled against this tax causing the U.S. army to fight against them. Congress didn't think that the tax would affect people the way it did.
The Last Words as President
I look forward to a life of good laws under a free government.
George Washington personally led the U.S. army to fight the rebels. When his troops showed up to the battle, the rebels had already retreated. There ended up being no battle in this war. The tax on whiskey was eventually repealed.
Washington declined a run for a third presidential term. He was tired of public life and said the people are America's true heroes. In his speech he warned everyone about the dangers of foreign ties and political conflicts at home. He also cautioned about too much debt.
Washington concluded his farewell speech by saying that he looked forward to a life "of good laws under a free government, the ever favorite object of my heart." Those were his final words as president of the United States of America.
