Sorry General Hooker but we're going to have to let you go, this isn't working out
Your going to pick General Meade over me?!
Darn right I'm replacing you!
I said to OCCUPY CEMETERY HILL!!!
General Ewell! I need you to occupy Cemetery Hill!
Don't occupy Cemetery Hill? Whatever you say boss!
What's that? I can't hear you!!!
Oh, nothing, it's not like your absence affected the battle or anything like that....
Hey Guys! What'd I miss?!
Where were you! we actually had a chance to win!
Five days before Gettysburg even started, General Joseph Hooker was relieved of commanding duty and replaced by George Meade. General Meade would go on to lead the army of Potomac during the fight. After John Reynolds death on the first day of battle, Robert E. Lee took control of an army of in Northern Virginia which eventually led to the Pickett's charge. The battle started when the Confederate stumbled into a Union march. The battle happened on accident and what was supposed to be a small quarrel turned into a three day blood fest
That's right, run away! and don't ever come back!
Despite several failed attempts at Invading the North General Lee of the Confederate wanted to try again at Gettysburg, after driving the Union out of town Lee commanded General Ewell to occupy Cemetery Hill but miscommunication between two men led to a fatal encounter with the Union in Gettysburg. The entire battle derived from a mistake the two generals had made but despite such odds the Confederate managed to wipe out the Union's left and right flanks
Here lies all the 620,000 or so men that gave their lives for a truly worth cause, sure they might've fallen within a matter of seconds but what matters is that they tried and... Oh you get the point
You really do suck at your job
Meade's entire force of 104,000 men was preparing to face off against Lee's 75,000 men, James Longstreet was called upon to eliminate the Union's left flank while General Ewell attacked the right flank, at first Longstreet rejected this plan of attack but his less direct approach was rejected by Lee. For a short while, the Confederate was actually overwhelmed the Union but George Meade's reserve units and General Stuart's absence from the Confederate led to a Union comeback.
Three days of fighting and all you can give is a 2 minute speech! and you have the nerve to say your grateful!
And so in conclusion I would like say that I'm very grateful for the...
Well at least I had to the courtesy to give some of the soldiers a proper burial in the cemetery house this time around so stop whining you big baby!
Wait, your finished already?
Despite Pickett's division managing to break the union line, the charge was met with heavy canon fire from the Union side which overmatched the 150 pieces of artillery Lee's unit had in possession, the Union might've initially fallen to Pickett's attack but felt a high sense of morale from repelling General Stuart's attack from the rear of the Union forces.which led to the Confederate retreating to the safety of Virginia despite being able to rally to the Copse of Trees. The battle on day 3 was by far the bloodiest racking up over 44,000 total casualties
Despite the battle happening on accident, Gettysburg served as a huge turning point because Lee couldn't replace all the men he had lost. Needless to say, the Civil War is by far one of the bloodiest wars ever fought, the Union lost 23,000 men while the Confederate lost 21,000 men. On top of that, more commanding officers were killed in Gettysburg than in any other battle during the Civil war, a large amount of slave also fled the Confederate which truly forced Lee to retreat to Virginia on July 4th 1863.
At least I bothered to show up, so you can go and jump in a lake
The Gettysburg Address was delivered on November 19th 1863, the cemetery houses housed the remains of 3,600 Union soldiers, the speech was delivered by Abraham Lincoln and his speech was short and concise, but the gist of it mainly focused on how those who died in the war did not die in vain and because those sacrifices the country would have a promise of eternal government for the people by the people. Even so, people were upset to have only received a short speech after the three days of battle
