Kino awakened I the near dark. The roosters rowing, the pigs ceaselessly turning of twigs, and bits of wood to see whether anything to eat had been overlooked. Outside the brush house little birds chittered and flurried. In the hanging box Coyotito slept. Kino heard splashes of morning waves on the beach. He slipped his feet into his sandals and went outside to watch the dawn.
Kino and Juana stop where they were and saw a scorpion climbing up a rope to the baby’s box. Its stinging tail was straight out behind him where he could strike at any moment. In Kino’s mind he had a new song the song of evil which was the music of the enemy.
They came to the gate of the doctor’s house and Kino pounded the iron ring against the gate. The big gate opened a few inches and a man of the same race was standing there. Kino told the man of the same race that they needed the skill of the healer. He closed the gate a little and refused to speak in the old language and told Kino that he was going to inform the doctor.
Kino finds the pearl of the world while diving. He can now use it to pay for the doctor and become a rich man.
The Doctor visits, hearing about the pearl Kino found. He feeds Coyotito poison and claims the scorpion sting is acting up again. Kino believes him after he gives Coyotito
