Ghost Stories from around the World (Project) - The Weeping Woman - 7th grade ELA - Ms. Kauffmann - 2017

Storyboard Text

  • The Weeping Woman   {Spanish folktale} Once there was a woman named Maria. She lived in Mexico.
  • The man she loved would not have her, so she took her children down to the river in a rage. One by one, she drowned them.
  • When the man she loved rejected her once again, she realized what she had done.
  • She went to the water and threw herself in, to subject herself to the same fate as her children.
  • But heaven would not have Maria, so she was stuck on Earth as a ghost to grieve for her children alone. She is La Llorona — the wailing woman.
  • The people who have seen her said that they could see her walking, soaking wet, wearing all white. And she can be heard crying out for the little ones she killed. "Ay, mis hijos!" she weeps. ("Oh, my children!")
