  • In order to keep your own body from destroying your new liver, you must take immunosuppressant drugs
  • WHY?
  • Is this why it gets inflamed after surgery?
  • Your Macrophages will identify the new liver as a foreign object and natural killer cells will immediately take action.
  • Yes. The drugs we are prescribing act similar to Suppressor T Cells and interleukin in regulating the production of harmful agents and Helper T Cells to protect your new liver.
  • But I don’t want to take pills for the rest of my life!
  • Without the drugs to stop your humoral response, B Cells will release the antibodies that will destroy you new liver and then the remaining “threats” (parts of your liver) would be digested by the enzymes in nearby lysosomes.
  • That sounds painful!
  • :(
  • Although the liver isn’t a virus or bacteria, it is still viewed as an antigen, so the Cytotoxic T cells in your body will attack it because your cell mediated response is for leukocytes to be released.
  • Then can’t you just give me a vaccine instead?
  • It is your own body and not a disease, we can’t just give you a vaccine because it is a natural response. You have take the drugs everyday to protect yourself.
  • Ok, that makes sense
