  • The Haymarket Square Riot occurred on May 4th, 1886 as a rally against police for killing several people at a strike the day before.
  • Eventually the police arrived to break up the rally.
  • At one point, an unknown man threw a stick of dynamite at the police, killing several
  • In response to the bomb, police fired back at the protesters, killing at least one civilian.
  • Eight men were tried for their actions and, with no solid defense, one man was sentenced to hanging.
  • The riots sparked a new wave of discrimination towards foreign workers, as many of whom were part of the riots. Many foreigners were also rounded up as a result.
