Perry, we've discussed a lot over these months about your childhood, but I think it's time you tell me about the Clutters. Tell me about what you did.
Well, it started when we tied the family up, when we brought the father and son down to the basement.
I set the father down on a mattress box and the son on the couch. I put a pillow under the son's head since he was coughing so much.
Then, when I was faced with having to kill them, I just seemed to do it, with little thought involved.
By the time I went upstairs and killed the mother and daughter, I felt like I was out of my body, watching myself.
Perry, that is just horrible how you were forced into such a situation.
Well, I wasn't really forced, I just went along with it and followed through with it.
Even so, you still were so kind and gentle, even bringing Kenyon a pillow to lay his head on. And who could blame you after having such a traumatic childhood? It's really not you fault what happened.
