  • The Germans have ordered all the Jews onto the train and are transporting them to a city on the Czechoslovakian border. The train is cramped only few can sit at the same time. A lady named Mrs. Schachter would often scream about seeing fire when there was none. After more traveling by train they arrived at Auschwitz.
  • CH. 1
  • Listen to me! You must! Jews they are coming for you, they have already killed many!
  • At arrival to Auschwitz the SS guards order that men and women separate going left and right. One of the veteran inmates told Elie that his age was 18 not 16, and his father is 50 so they would pass the first selection. They see that people are being sent to the crematorium, they are sent to barracks where they are given clothes.

  • Father I will come and wake you when it is your turn to shower.
  • The other Jews gather and celebrate Rosh Hashanah although Elie questions God and why he should worship him. It is selection time, the SS doctor comes through doing an initial inspection. Then they have to run to prove that they are still strong enough to work. Elie's foot swells so he goes to the hospital to get it treated having it comfortable for awhile.
  • CH. 9
  • Moishe the Beadle comes back to tell the jews of the atrocities the Nazi's are doing, although every one does not believe thinking that his stories are unbelievable. The the germans come living inside Jewish homes, they start to order their valuables are to be taken away. They move them out of their homes and into ghettos.
  • Everyone is lined up to take showers and Elie's father lays down into the snow to sleep, he wont get up for Elie so Elie goes back for him later to let him know he can shower, he is not there. His father lays in his bunk moaning for Elie to help. In the morning Elie finds his father no longer there, he has died.
  • I just want to sleep, let me sleep Elie
