Langston Hughes was born Feb 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His parents were divorced soon after his birth. His father moved to Mexico and his mother traveled often to find jobs. He was a only child. At age eight, he then was raised by his grandma and then they moved to Lawrence, Kansas
He moved in with his grandma at age eight and started at a new school.
One day Langston's grandma took him to see Booker T. Washington. He became inspired and started to write poems in school. Then he became the class "Class Poet."
Langston then joined the Harlem Renaissance group. A group of African Americans, that write poems, plays, short stories etc. It is located in New York. They celebrated black traditions, the black voice and black ways of life.
Soon after, his grandma died, his mom took him to college and he became famous by writing poems, plays, short stories, etc.
Langston died May 22, 1907 by cancer in New York City. In the end he was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. But James Mercer Langston Hughes will never be forgotten.
