Jonas starts to see colours through the form of the apple. This makes him appear different from the community. Page 39, "he couldn't adequately understand- the apple had changed."
This moment in the book is very important as he takes on the job of the new receiver. This sets up for all of the future events in the book. Page 86, "Jonas, she said, speaking not to him but the community as a whole, you will be trained to be our next receiver of memory."
Thank you for making me the new receiver
Jonas starts to take on the knowledge and the burdens of others and discovers that his world isn't normal. Page 137, "He stared at the flat, colourless sky, bringing blue from it, and remembered sunshine, until finally, for an instant, he could feel warmth."
This is important as it shows that Jonas starts to break the rules and starts to think of escaping the community. Page
I'm not taking those anymore. I know the truth
This is important as it shows the first time that Jonas breaks a major rule and is the first time that he has lied in a community of people that are obliged to tell the truth. Page 207 says, "First, he had left a dwelling at night, a major transgression." Showing that Jonas is breaking rules now.
I like living in the community (I lied)
This is the end scene where Jonas escapes the community with the baby Gabriel and releases all of the memories he has back to the community. Page 212 says, " As he peddled throughout the night, through isolated landscape now, with the communities far behind him," showing that Jonas has escaped the community.
