Deceit in Catcher in the Rye
Hi I'm Caulfield Holden, I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. Its Awful. Almost every time i talk to someone there's a lie in it somewhere.
Scene 1: Holden Lies to Mrs. Morrow about who he his and how amazing her son is.
"No he didn't"
"And the reason he was elected, was because Ernie wouldn't let us nominate him...Didn't he tell you about it"
Scene 2: Holden tries to lie his way out of the prostitue
"What the heck did you tell that crazy Maurice you wanted a girl for, then?"
"Its just that I'm practically just recovering from a very serious-"
Holden lies and is deceitful to people many times in the book to the point where it becomes normal.
Holden gets on the train leaving to New York and talks to a woman on the train called Mrs. Morrow. He lies about who he is and also lies about how amazing her son is.
Holden buys a prostitute without thinking and when she finally arrives he tries to play it off like he recently had surgery to avoid actually doing anything with her.
