Before independence land in El Salvador was shared communally.
After independence rich people were able to monopolise the farmers land.
In 1929 a world-wide financial crisis caused a severe slump in coffee prices. The rich people decided not to harvest that year this left the poor farmers to starve.
Protests began as this decision sparked outrage. Lots of farmers were crushed and 30,000 people killed.
Military regimes started happening against the farmers that lasted 50 years. Some protesters were put in prison and some killed. Some peasants died of starvation as well.
El Salvador became a very corrupt place to live. Many people were killed and if the peasants every threatened the positions of the rich people bribery was used and some people went missing who supported peasents
