Nick Carraway is the narrator for Gatsby's story. This is used to provide a second perspective to Gatsby's life. Nick tends to have a very neutral opinion about things
Nick sells bonds. He was able to make a good fortune coming from a middle class family. He received his education at Yale. Nick has a house in West Egg.
"When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever" (1)
Nick goes to East Egg where his cousin, Daisy, and her husband, Tom Buchanen, live. Daisy is worried that Tom has a mistress. Tom is makes racist gestures throughout the night.
Nick becomes disgusted with them. He is confused on why Daisy puts up with Tom cheating on her. He also thinks that the whole family is snobbish
"My house was at the very tip of the egg, only fifty yards from the Sound, and squeezed between two huge places that rented for twelve or fifteen thousand a season."(1)
