  • May Amelia sadly says, "My baby's dead"(Holm 176).
  • Propelling The Action...
  • Grandmother yells, "...the babe would be alive if this evil girl wouldn't have handled her so"(Holm 178).
  • Outcome...
  • May Amelia tells Wilbert, "I will never go home. I will never forget what happened on Smith Island" (Holm 185).
  • May Amelia Jackson has to take care of baby Amy since her mom is sick but Grandmother Patience came to move in with the Jackson's and she hates May Amelia. After just a few weeks, baby Amy passes away in her sleep.

  • May Amelia says, "What do you think Buttons? Do you think I can catch that mean old Micah Anderson?" (Holm 148).
  • Grandmother Patience blaming May Amelia for the death of the baby causes May and Wilbert(Her brother) runs away to go live with her Aunt Feenie and Uncle Henry.

  • May Amelia says to herself, "I suspect she is waiting for me to come on down so that she can eat me" (Holm 151).
  • If Grandmother Patience didn't yell at May Amelia, she wouldn't have ran away with her brother to stay at her Aunt and Uncles house for a long time before their father comes to get them.
  • Outcome...
  • May Amelia explains to the men when they find her, "I was just trying to find Micah Anderson!" (Holm 153).
  • In Town, a woman is murdered and May Amelia decides she is going to go catch the murderer but first, she talks to her cat (Buttons) about it in the barn.
  • While she is out, she finds a baby bear which triggers the mam to try to protect her baby and May gets stuck in a tree. May Amelia going off to look for the suspected killer and getting lost after dark also causes...
  • A huge search and rescue party to go after her to find her. If May Amelia didn't go off to find the killer, their wouldn't be a huge rescue party going after her early in the morning.
