Why has Betty fainted?! All you girls were practicing witchcraft!
I promise Uncle, we were just dancing in the forest, and Betty is not bewitched, she just fainted!
Your mother is dead and buried!! Stop faking!!
I want my mama!!
The story opens in 1692 Salem, where several girls and a slave named Tituba have gathered around a fire, dancing and wishing, when a sudden hysteria breaks out among them, causing one of the girls, 10 year old Betty Parris, to faint
Abigail Williams, one of the girls there, reassures Betty's father, Rev. Parris that no witchcraft or Devil-related things happened at this "meeting", as Betty lies "unresponsive"
As soon as Parris has left, Abigail and the other girls attempt to wake up Betty, for they know she is pretending. She tries to jump out of the window when they do this.
