Barry the robot wants to have fun in the outdoors. He does not want to get hurt though, so he will use trigonometry to help him stay safe.
Barry is going cliff jumping. He first has to make sure that it is safe for him to jump. He is standing towards the water at a 45º angle and knows that the cliff is 30 feet tall. He needs to know how steep the jump is though, so he does 30 divided by cos 45º and gets 42 feet. Let's go jumping!
Barry was hiking and found a coconut on a tree. He wanted to eat it but had to figure out at what angle he must be at to jump up and get it. Barry knows that he is 6 feet away from the base of the tree. He also knows that it is a 8 ft. jump up to the grab the coconut. He just doesn't know what angle he has to jump at. So, Barry does sin –1 (6/8) and gets 49º. Barry has to jump at a 49º angle.
