This James Smith, he is a 29 year old immigrant from Ireland. After a long trip across the Atlantic, and after surviving everything from disease to the long journey on a boat.
When James immigrated to America he got a job in Boston as a railroad worker. He laid the tracks for the railroad systems to be build.
James arrives on a ship in the Castle Garden in 1855, which was an immigration port in Manhattan. It was a rough journey from Ireland. And it was even worse when he got off the boat. People laughed and made fun of the Irish immigrants.
After making it though all the customs and gaining his citizenship into the United States, he found a place to settle and build a house. He never went to school so he had to learn to read and write with the help of some others that made the trip with him.
James speaks English fine and after a while over living in the US he found that things are way different here than they are in Ireland. He has so many more rights here than he ever did. James found he's so much happier here then he was back home.
After 37 years of living in the United States he was diagnosed with teburculosis and he passes away in his home on a winter night.
