  • This was SPAIN!
  • Peace
  • A letter was stolen from Spain and described McKinley as "weak and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd"
  • The list of Demands
  • Demands • compinsation for U.S.S. Maine • end to reconcentration camps • truce in Cuba • Cuban Independence
  • At the time it was believed that this was the Spanish's doing. Papers jumped on the idea to criticize the Spanish.
  • Treaty of Paris
  • Mckinley refrained from war for a long time, even though America called for war.
  • Territory Gained
  • The list included compensation for the U.S.S. Maine, an end to the re concentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence. Spain Accepted all but the last.
  • We accept all but the last!
  • The U.S. signed the treaty of Paris with Spain in December 1898. Spanish government recognized Cuba’s independence.

  • In return for 20 million dollars, Spain also gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam. These became U.S territories.
