Lennie was in the barn alone when he took notice of the lifeless pup in front of him. He picked it up and asked why it had to die. He didn't understand why the pup was dead and thought that because it wasn't as small as a mouse that he could be rough with it. However this wasn't the case and Lennie ended up killing the pup.
After looking at the lifeless pup Lennie was reminded that George said if he did anything else bad that he wouldnt be able to tend the rabbits in the ranch. Furious at these thoughts Lennie threw the pup across the barn and turned his back on it.
