  • King Duncan names his son Malcolm as the heir to the throne.
  • Act 1, Scene 4
  • "We will establish our estate upon Our eldest, Malcolm, who we name hereafter The Prince of Cumberland."
  • Yay! I will be king.
  • The Prince of Cumberland lies in my way of the crown.
  • Lady Macbeth tells the spirits to take away her femininity and make her a cruel person so that she may have what it takes to obtain the crown.
  • Act 1, Scene 5
  • "Come you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood."
  • Macbeth is contemplating the consequences of his actions and thinks of reasons not to kill Duncan but Lady Macbeth calls him a coward and puts a plan in place.
  • Act 1, Scene 7
  • But the king trusts me and he is a good leader...
  • "If we should fail-"
  • We will kill Duncan while he sleeps and will will blame the drunk servants.
  • "We fail? But screw your courage to the place and we'll not fail."
