Storyboard Text

  • Two university educators and a sixth-grade teacher collaborated to create and implement a five-day engineering unit that incorporated both mathematics and science concepts and hands-on learning. The sixth grade teacher chose to take a graduate course in order to learn engineering concepts after hearing a presentation with his sixth grade students. Once the teacher was comfortable with his new knowledge, he adapted the experiments presented in the course, and used them with his students. There was a total of three experiments.
  • Hello, I am a 6th grade teacher!
  • In the first experiment, students explored tension by comparing how much a material of two different diameters stretched when weights of various sizes were hung on it, and they carefully recorded their measurements in a data chart.
  • Hmm... I wonder how far these weights will make each material stretch?
  • In the second experiment, students learned about the importance of the I-beam construction.
  • Wow, I can't wait to find out what an I-beam is!
  • For the third experiment, students conducted an exploration with brass and steel rods of different lengths. Through all of their previous experiments, students learned that they could use mathematics and the information learned from the experiments to appropriately predict the ways in which structures would react to certain stresses. Making these predictions solidified algebraic ideas related to what x-y graphs can describe and helped them begin to develop a basic conceptual sense of the ideas related to equilibrium.  <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-font-charset:78; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1791491579 18 0 131231 0;} @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1107305727 0 0 415 0;} @font-face {font-family:Cambria; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1073743103 0 0 415 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} .MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} @page WordSection1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;} -->
  • Wow! I've learned so much throughout these three experiments, I love school!
  • Yeah, me too!
  • This article related to our class specifically, such that us college students are acting as the 6th grade students and Mrs. Tank is acting as the 6th grade teacher. She is currently teaching us a bunch of different engineering design techniques, as well as the math, science, and creativity behind them. This is the same thing that the 6th grade teacher is doing with his students through the different experiments.
  • Mrs. Tank, thank you for teaching us such valuable life lessons. I don't know how we would survive without you?
  • This is important to us as future teachers because just as the 6th graders use this information to improve and relate to their own every day life, we do the same thing with the information we learn and we will one day incorporate these techniques and concepts in our own classrooms. It is important for us as future teachers to have in-depth knowledge in a variety of areas.
  • I can't wait to be a teacher one day and use this new knowledge with my future students!
