  • We are losing everything!
  • Everyone expects their job if they are old enough to work. As the officer walks around telling people whether they are valuable enough, Lida is worried whether or not she will be picked to work. If you looked weak, you have to go to the hospital.
  • Lida sticks up for herself when she is chosen to go to the hospital. When she got off of the train as she arrived at the camp, a woman told her to become useful or die. She knew she had to do something so she put her skills her mom taught her to use. Sewing.
  • In this scene, the officer thinks that he does need a seamstress, and allows her to be his. I choose this scene because of the huge effect that it has on the book. Everyone was brought there because they were forced to work. This scene captures Lida’s process of getting a job. I think this scene is very important and shows how brave Lida is to talk to a Nazis officer.
