In 1603 James became the king of England. He was a Protestant and not very lenient with Catholics. This made Catholics angry.
A man called Thomas Catesby thought up a plan to blow up parliment on the day it opened. The king and M.P's would be there. He hoped a new king might be fairer to Catholics. He told 3 of his friends and they all agreed that they needed an explosives expert.
After recruiting Guido (Guy) Fawkes as the explosives man Thomas Catesby asked Francis Tresham for some money and he agreed. . They then recruited some men to help dig a tunnel. But then the Thames leaked in to the tunnel. They also found out the walls to the House of Lords were too thick.
Lord Monteagle was a Catholic M.P and was Francis Tresham's cousin. Francis didn't want to kill him so sent an anonymous letter to him warning him to not attend the opening of parliament. He was confused so showed the king's chief minister who then showed the king. Meanwhile Guy Fawkes was guarding the gunpowder.
The king then ordered an inspection of the cellar. They found a man sat on some wood named Johnson. After a second inspection gunpowder was found. Johnson was arrested. At the tower of London he was tortured and admitted he was Guy Fawkes.
4 days later he confessed to the plot and soldiers were sent to the Midlands. Percy and Catesby were shot dead. They rest of the plotters were found guilty of high treason and hung drawn and quartered.
