The Electoral College - This is the system that we use to elect our leaders The Vice President and President of the United States
Our Government Electing the President
This Idea was thought up by our founding fathers way back in the 1700's when our constitution was being created.
The Idea was proposed to separate the power of electing the President between the people and the more experienced government officials.
The Process is simple: First people go to the ballots in their state and vote for their choice, The Democratic nominee or the Republican one or even a independent if they choose.
So, in each state the votes get added up. Whichever candidate has the majority wins that state, and will get that states electoral votes.
(Total # of votes; 12) Vote outcome Jeff (Democrat) - IIIIIII (7 votes) Penny (Republican) - IIII (4 votes) Other (Independent) - I (1 vote)
Heres an example: ; Lets say that in Vermont only twelve people voted. Jeff now has won that state because he received the majority of the votes, So Jeff now gets all of Vermont's electoral votes.
