"yes, Merrick repeated, even more distinctly."(86)
This is the scene that makes Dr.Treves decide that the Elephant man needs to go to the hospital. This is because he is being poorly treated by Bytes and Tony. I think this scene is important because it gives us insight into how the elephant is being treated. This also leads to the elephant man getting put into the hospital where Dr.Treves works with him a lot and learns more about him.
This is the first setting we come to with Dr.Treves and his family at the circus. This is where we meet everyone and Dr.Treves fist sees a glimpse of the elephant man leading him to want to see more. So basically we would not have this book if we did not meet everyone in this first scene.
Hospital room description
This is the scence where we learn that Merrick or the elphant man can actually talk. This is very important because it changes what we think of the elphant man a little bit. It also shows that even if people are differnt they still are people and need to be treated like it.
