  • The big brother is mourning the death of his brother Doodle.
  • Some words that are used throughout the story are grave, bridge, and dead. This shows a dark setting.
  • Doodle was described as a a kid with a big head. His body was red and all shriveled up.
  • This foreshadows the death of Doodle. "The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted through our house, speaking softly the names of our dead."
  • The narrator (the big brother) speaks in the past tense throughout the story by using imagery from his experiences which could help explain the theme which is mourning / remembering past loved ones.
