The Jay Treaty was an agreement in which fixed the U.S relationship with Britain. Half of the political parties agreed with it, while the other half did not.
Washington's farewell speech was advice to the American Citizens when he was about to leave office. His three main points were to avoid conflict between factions, avoid conflict in Europe, and that the President shouldn't serve more than two terms.
Alien & Sedition Acts
Political Parties developed when Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson had different beliefs for the government. Some of those beliefs were the following: state or federal power, support of Britain or France, loose or strict understanding of the Constitution, for or against a national bank, and for or against protective tariffs.
The XYZ Affair happened when the French was attacking American Ships. Washington sent three representatives to France to try and make peace with them. When the three American delegates arrived, three agents from the French minister met them and demanded a $250,000 bribe to see the French Minister. The Americans refused.
The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed in 1798 and signed by John Adams. These laws included new powers to deport foreigners as well as to make it harder for new immigrants to vote.
The Midnight appointments were made by John Adams just before he was succeeded by President Thomas Jefferson. Adams saw the appointments as a way to preserve Federalist influence in the federal government during the Jeffersonian tenure. So, at Midnight he tried to pack the courts with Federalists.
