The Government had National Guard soldiers guard them. (eventually, Army soldiers replaced them, after they realized the how bad it had gotten/will get).
KEEP US SEPARATE KEEP US SEPARATE
The guards were needed. Thousands of people against intergration and would yell, scream, and attempt to beat up or kill the students.
This would continue all year. In May 1958, the first African American graduated at Little Rock Central High. His name was Ernest Green.
Little Rock would close all their schools for the whole year, because of a public vote to determine if integration would be stopped. The vote ended up being against integration.
The other eight students would transfer to different schools to finish there schooling.
These nine students are all heroes to the civil rights movement. They were brave and strong enough to endure discrimination. They were awarded Congressional Gold Medals in 1999 from president Bill Clinton for their efforts
Eventually, all over the US integration would begin and multiracial schools were the norm.
