I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Chapter 7
This storyboard does not have a description.
Angelou's grandmother was married 3 times, to Mr. Johnson (Angelou's grandfather), Mr. Henderson, and Mr. Murphy.
Her grandmother was tall and her hands were large. Her voice was loud, and only soft when she wanted it to be. She was seen by Angelou as powerful and strong.
The minister would ask her to lead a hymn, and she would ask "who, me?" every time.
After assuring she was called on, she neatly laid her handkerchief on her handbag, then stood up and sang.
Angelou's grandmother was respected and was one of the only African Americans to once be called "Mrs."
The one time was when an judge in a court case asked if she was Mrs. Henderson, and when she said yes, people in the audience laughed, because they thought it was ridiculous for a white man to call and African American woman "Mrs."
