In a future world, where society revolves around a computer, Multivac, that knows all and can tell all, it has predicted that there is a small chance for two murders to occur in one day. Bernard Gillian is worried that if anyone dies, his reputation will be tarnished.

Bernard contacts Ali Othman, who tells Bernard that he will prevent the murders from happening, however does not inform him of the magnitude of the situation.

Every year, in all parts of the world there is a swearing in of the eighteen year olds, where the now adults are given a separate file from their parents in Multivac's database. Randolf T. Hoch does the swearing in.
After the ceremony Ben the self proclaimed "happiest sixteen year old in Baltimore" Met up with his newly graduated brother, Michael. They then started off home.
Ben and Michael went home, only to find that, for some reason, their father Joe Manners had been put under house arrest.
