  • John C. Breckenridge
  • I represent southern democrats.
  • Lincoln was an abolitionist. He also believed that the government had a defined purpose in American citizen's lives. He was a symbol of the frontier, hard work, the self-made man, and the American Dream.
  • John Bell
  • I represent the constitutional union party.
  • Douglas was an ardent supporter of slavery. However, he also supported popular sovereignty and compromises.
  • Outcome
  • Breckenridge campaigned on a pro-slavery platform. He demanded federal intervention to protect slaveholders in the territories. He was also vocal about maintaining the Union.
  • Although Bell was a slave owner, he opposed the Southern expansion of slavery. He too was focused on keeping the union together.  He supported the Compromise of 1850.
  • Lincoln received only 40% of the popular vote. This frustrated the South, who didn't contribute a single vote towards him.
  • Yay! I won! Isn't that just swell? South Carolina, why are you giving me that look, wait, are you leaving - no don't go...
