Breckenridge campaigned on a pro-slavery platform. He demanded federal intervention to protect slaveholders in the territories. He was also vocal about maintaining the Union.
Although Bell was a slave owner, he opposed the Southern expansion of slavery. He too was focused on keeping the union together. He supported the Compromise of 1850.
