Why does it feel like women's sports are still not quite equal to men's? Isn't that what Title IX is for?
Why Title IX?
Well, you are not needed anymore.
Girls can't play baseball!
We played professional baseball during WWII.
What is Title IX?
I want to play football.
I want to do cheerleading!
While many of us may have heard of Title IX, we may not be clear on the details of it's existence. Did you Know?: "Title IX remains the only law that grants women any kind of equality in America" (.https://www.billiejeanking.com/equality/title-ix/).
Has Title IX Made any Impact?
Title IX has helped me to achieve my dream of excelling as a top athlete at a top university. What's next?
"The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was written to end discrimination based on sex, religion, race, color, and national origin in the area of employment. However, it did not prohibit gender discrimination in public education and federally assisted programs, including high school and collegiate athletic programs" (https://www.billiejeanking.com/equality/title-ix/).
We still have a lot of work to do
NBA refs make $100,000 - 300,000 a season according to CNN.com
Title IX states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” (https://www.billiejeanking.com/equality/title-ix/).
How do I know if my school is compliant with Title IX?
I'm Billy Jean King, and I have been fighting for equality my entire life and played a major part in the passing of Title IX. Along with my many accomplishments, I started the Women’s Sports Foundation in 1974.
The law opened doors and removed barriers for girls and women, and while female athletes and their sports programs still have fewer teams, fewer scholarships, and lower budgets than their male counterparts, since Title IX’s passage, female participation at the high school level has grown by 1057 percent and by 614 percent at the college level.(https://www.billiejeanking.com/equality/title-ix/).
There is still a staggering amount of inequality when it comes to Women in sports. Just one of those issues being their salaries. "The NBA pays its players about 50% of league revenue whereas WNBA players receive less than 25% of the revenue, reports Forbes" (https://www.blackenterprise.com/wnba-salaries-nba-salaries-2018-update/).
WNBA starting salary: $41,202 with a salary cap at $115,500
NBA Starting Salary: 560,000 Potential to earn over $34 million a year salary
