As a new term begins and Carrie emerges from her History classroom, it is noticed by many that she has lost both her confident stride and her smile that could light where the sun couldn't reach.
Carrie walks through the schoolyard with a handful of textbooks and a sandwich wrapped in brown paper. It is her final few weeks of year nine and she has a feeling that this short time will be trouble-ridden.
She stands alone and looks around. She sees Cassidy, her old best-friend, who was once like a sister to her. “I wonder if Cassidy will speak to me today. Surely she has forgiven me by now", Carrie explains sadly.
Cassidy walks right by Carrie as if she couldn't even tell she was there. In the distance, Carrie hears her exclaim to a group of girls, "Oh my goodness! Carrie has put on a few during the holidays, if you know what I mean."
As soon as she hears this, Carrie runs away to a place where she can be alone. "Look at how fat I am", she says, agreeing with the negative yet false words she heard from Cassidy.
Still upset, Carrie spends the remainder of the break sitting by herself. She looks around the classroom and notices a rogue piece of coal. While she is confused by its presence, she is interrupted by the bell shortly afterwards.
