Chapter 1: The Jews were moved into the ghettos until they were later deported. "Two Ghettos were created in Sighet ... The street we lived on, Serpent Street, was in the first ghetto." (Wiesel 11)

Chapter 2: The Jews are on the train being transported to Auschwitz, they finally arrive at Auschwitz at the end of the chapter. "In the air, the smell of burning flesh. It must have been around midnight. We had arrived. In Birkenau." (Wiesel 28)
Chapter 3: Elie and his family arrive at Auschwitz-Birkneau. Once they arrive him and his father are separated from his mother and siblings. "I was leaving my mother and Tzipora forever." (Wiesel 29)
Women to the right, men to the left!
Chapter 4: Elie and his father are transferred to Buna which is a much nicer camp. Once they are there they get good jobs working in a warehouse. "The work was not difficult. Sitting on the ground, we counted bolts, bulbs, and various small electrical parts." ( Wiesel 50)
Chapter 5: The Jews within the camp celebrate Rosh Hashanah. After Dr. Mengele performs a selection to select campers to die. Elie passes and his father doesn't. Elie thinks his father is going to be killed but to his surprise his father is still alive when he returns. "Ina few moments a selection will take place... Then you will have to go, one by one, before the SS doctors." ( Wiesel 71)
Chapter 6: The campers have to march through the snow. At first they think they are evacuating but soon realize they are running from the Russians. The trek is exhausting many have died along the way. " My father's presence was the only thing that stopped me. he was running next to me, out of breath, out of strength, desperate." (Wiesel 86)
