  • Language and Communication
  • It is easier not to say anything. Shut your trap, button your lip, can it. All that crap you hear on TV about communication and expressing feelings is a lie. Nobody really wants to hear what you have to say. (3.13)
  • Isolation
  • I guess I'll answer if [David] calls. But if he touches me I'll explode, so a date is out of the question. No touching. (73.14)
  • Education
  • "You're imagination is paralyzed," Mr. Freeman declares. "You need to take a trip… You need to visit the mind of the great one." (57.1)
  • Throughout the book, Melinda struggles with communication and expressing how she actually feels. This quote shows that she thinks it's easier to keep how you feel inside. However, by the end of the book, she realizes, this is not the case.
  • Friendship
  • She is not any part of a pretend Rachelle-chick. I can only see third grade Rachel who liked barbeque potato chips and who braided pink… thread into my hair that I wore for months until my mom made me take it out. (69.6)
  • This quote shows how her being raped effects her relationships. The aftermath of the rape causes her to isolate herself from any possible risk, for example going out with David.
  • Sadness
  • This shows how Melinda's Art teacher, Mr. Freeman is the only teacher who cares about what his students have been through or what they have to say. Unlike Mr. Neck, who doesn't let his students talk their opinions. Melinda thrives in art because she can express herself, while she doesn't do so well in her other classes because she can't.
  • Guilt and Blame
  • This quote shows that Melinda treasures her old friendships. Even though they stopped talking to her, she still loves them and wants to make sure that they are okay. For example in the book, Melinda always notices Ivy and Nicole and talks about what they are good at. Also, even though Rachel was mean to her throughout the book, Melinda makes sure to warn her about Andy, and what he did to her
  • This quote shows how sad Melinda is. This continues throughout the book on different occasions. For example, her wanting to sleep all the time is a sign of depression. All of this leads up to her hurting herself.
  • I get out of my bed and take down the mirror. I put it back in my closet, facing the wall. (6.11)
  • This quote shows that Melinda thinks that she is the one to blame for what happened at the party. Every one at school blames Melinda for everyone getting into trouble and calling the cops at the party. This contributes to her guilt. She, also, thinks it was her fault she was raped because she was drinking.
  • I want to confess everything, to hand over the guilt and mistake and anger to someone else. (24.4)
