Orpheus, the greatest poet and musician and Eurydice, a wood nymph, were to have a beautiful wedding as they were truly in love with one another.
Eurydice was then bitten by a snake and stumbled and fell to her death before Orpheus could save her.
Orpheus was overcome with grief that the human world could not contain, so he decided he would travel to the land of the dead, where no living creature had ever returned from, to rescue his lost love.
The When Orpheus reached the gates of the underworld, he begun to strum his lyre.The music he played was so beautiful, even the three headed dog Cerberus, lay down as he passed. Charon, who charged dead souls to cross the river styx, was so moved by the music that he brought Orpheus across free of charge.
He pleaded Hades and Persephone to allow Eurydice to live longer and they granted this under the condition he didnt look back for her as they climbed from the underworld.
Orpheus looked back and was separated from his love. He then returned to the real world and then sang songs of his lost love. the Maenada were jealous of his love toward her and killed him. Orpheus and Eurydice were once again united forever.
